Early in a mortgage almost all of each payment is interest. Every extra dollar of principal you pay removes all the future interest that dollar would have accrued for the rest of the loan — so even a small monthly extra can cut years and tens of thousands of dollars. Paying extra is only worth it after high-interest debt is gone and you have an emergency fund; compare the guaranteed "return" (your mortgage rate) to what you'd earn investing instead.
