This uses the standard amortizing-loan formula: each fixed monthly payment covers that month's interest plus some principal, and the loan reaches zero at the end of the term. Early payments are mostly interest; later ones are mostly principal. A longer term lowers the monthly payment but raises the total interest you pay — try changing the term to see the trade-off.
